    S. Duncan Black and Alonzo G. Decker launched a machine shop in Baltimore in 1910. Their first foray into the power tool industry was in 1916, when the founders filed a patent application for a portable ½ portable electric drill.

    The first plant opened in 1917 in Towson, Maryland.

    Just nine years after its founding, BLACK+DECKER's annual sales exceed $1 million. The same year, the company completes a new 20,000-square-foot factory in Towson.

    In 1946, BLACK+DECKER introduces the world’s first portable electric drill for consumers. The company launches a Home Utility line of drills and accessories. The DIY revolution begins.

    In 1961, Powered by nickel-cadmium cells, BLACK+DECKER introduces the world's first cordless electric drill, marking the first in a continuing series of cordless consumer power tools.

    Today Black + Decker continues to lead the power tool industry and earning a reputation for quality, ingenuity and value.
